These are the kinds of stories that remind us why safe housing matters. They are stories of women who found the strength to leave, the support to heal, and the foundation to build something new. They are the reason this work exists.

For the first time in years, I felt like I could actually plan for the future.

Maria's Story

Living independently with her children

Maria's Story

Maria left on a Tuesday night with her two young children and one bag. She had been planning her exit for months, waiting for the right moment, terrified of what would happen if she stayed and terrified of what would happen if she left. When she finally got out, she had no money, no plan, and nowhere to go. What she needed most was time — time to breathe, to get her children settled, to figure out the next step without the constant threat of danger. With stable housing and wraparound support, she was able to secure a protective order, enroll her kids in school, and begin counseling. Eighteen months later, she was employed full-time and living independently. 'I didn't know I could get here,' she said. 'I just knew I had to try.'

I had nothing when I walked out — and everything when I finally stood on my own.

Diane's Story

Employed full-time, living independently

Diane's Story

Diane had been in an abusive relationship for eleven years when she finally reached out for help. She was 42, with no job history, no savings, and a deep fear that it was too late to start over. The abuse had been financial as well as physical — she had been kept dependent on purpose. What she needed wasn't just a roof over her head. She needed time, resources, and people who believed she could do it. With access to stable housing, financial literacy support, and job training, she earned a certification in medical billing and found steady employment. She rebuilt her confidence one day at a time, and today she supports herself fully and lives on her own terms.

For the first time in years, my children laughed and played freely.

Keisha's Story

Family stable and healing

Keisha's Story

Keisha fled with three children under the age of eight. Her youngest had never known a home without fear — had never seen her mother fully exhale. The first thing Keisha noticed when they were finally safe was the sound of her kids playing. Loudly. Freely. Without looking over their shoulders. 'That moment changed everything,' she said. 'I knew we were going to be okay.' With her children in therapeutic programming and herself in counseling, Keisha began to rebuild — not just her circumstances, but her sense of who she was outside of the relationship. Her family is stable, healing, and moving forward.
